CLAPBACK is an exhibition series curated by Rui Lin. In the exhibition’s series of events, two artist-curators will participate in a weeklong showcase of their current works in progress. The program will feature an open critic session, led by artist collective UNBAG, between the two participants and the audience.

1.PARALLAX: FATA MORGANA

Parallax is the series title of Luica Kempkes’ work in progress. Fata Morgana is the title of Tim Wulff’s work in progress. Both artists explore mountain landscapes as: a cure for visual illusion, a medium of emotional interpretation (or not), and an invitation to question a place’s specificity. For Kempkes and Wulff, mountain landscapes represent non-linear narratives within a geographical dimension as the result of endless possibilities of positioning one’s physical existence in said landscape.

Lucia Kempkes (B.1988) researches the effects of landscapes on the personal perception of location, and searches for new ways to depict landscape to navigate how we exist between digital and analog spaces. She creates large-scale installations with drawings and video.

Kempkes lives in Berlin, studied at the Universität der Künste Berlin and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In 2014 she founded Mindscape Universe, an art collective with a project space in Berlin. She is currently an artist in residency at Pioneer Works.

Tim Wulff (B.1990) realized the video work Fata Morgana during his last trip to Cape Town, South Africa. The videos show Wulff’s search and attempt to be physically inside the clouds that lie on the top of Table Mountain (Hoerikwaggo).

Wulff lives in Berlin, studied at the Universität der Künste Berlin, and is the co-founder and director of Mindscape Universe and Embassy in Berlin. He is also a member of Immergutrocken (Immergut Festival.)
